A Novel Calls!

Published February 2, 2016 by A.J.B. Johnston

I posted earlier on this site that I am taking part in the Alistair MacLeod Mentorship Program of the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia, offering suggestions and support to Linda McLean as she crafts her first novel. The program is at the approximate half-way point, with public readings by all five authors to take place in Halifax at the WFNS space on May 7. I am eager to see just how far Linda will continue to deepen and enrich her characters, settings and scenes in the weeks ahead.

Linda McLean is yet another example of the fact that none of us has to be just one thing. Already a well-established singer / songwriter (and mother and educator), Linda felt the pull of crafting a story that was longer than could be told in a two or three minute song. It was a story that formed part of her family background. A tale set two hundred years ago on an island off Norway with a cast of characters that insisted inside Linda’s head that their stories had to be set down and shared with the world.

And that’s exactly what Linda has been doing since December 2015, and will continue to do so until the novel is done.
