Once upon a time, many years ago, I went to a public talk by a renowned English writer — Jessica Mitford I think. The only part I now recall of the evening was her opening joke. She said she was in San Francisco recently and saw a sign that advertised “Slide Insurance.” For a moment, or so she claimed, she thought that was insurance not for earthquake damage but for getting you out of having to look at people’s slides of a recent trip after dinner.
