Senate Revitalization

Published October 10, 2016 by A.J.B. Johnston

I am encouraged by several recent stories about the changes being made to Canada’s Senate — or at least being seriously proposed.

The shift away from partisan appointments to independent-thinking representatives holds tremendous promise. The Senate could soon become once again a vital part of our democracy, as was envisioned at the time of Confederation. What a relief to see the Red Chamber start to put the disappointments and frustrations of the past few years behind it.
